Lightning
by Nick C
This map by Nick C is the second we have got hold
of in this mad spurt from him, this is a capture the flag map.
I wasn't that impressed with this map to start off
with but after the first couple of minutes I thought what a stunning
level the graphics a suffeciently dark and misterious with the
added detail of an industrial factory.
Nick has put the light box object to good use in the corridors
and the lighting though a bit dark in some places is very atmospheric.
But let me say this again designers seem to be sticking to the
same layouts you find all sorts of different DM maps with very
different layouts but one thing that seems to have stuck with
CTF maps are the linear layout two rooms set the opposite sides
of the map for you to run across, and unfortunatly this maps falls
into this category.
Now admitidley Nick has put alot of thought into this map, the
ways you can actually get to the flag are numerous to say the
least. It took me many a game to figure out where certain rooms
are due to the complexity of the map, this can also hinder the
map
due to players not being familier with there surroundings.
This leads me onto one not major flaw but a niggle the map is
split over two layers but Nick has used the same sort of textures
in both areas, so If (I haven't done this) I'd of taken a pic
of the top section and then of the bottom section you wouldn't
really be able to tell the difference between them so imagine
playing it! This is by far not a major problem but can get confusing
at times.
You will need a semi powerful pc to run this, I have a P3 450
and the first screen slowed ever so slightly not much but enough
to notice.
Nick has also snuck the redeamer in but you have to be pretty
demon in controlling the thing to do any damage you have to be
far enough away due to the room it is situated in being to small
and you kill yourself if you clip a railing (Don't I know it!!).
The Bots on this level are spot on if not REALLY clever I found
myself being beaten by one of my team bots to the flag on several
occasions!!? So really I cant fault them at all I only once ever
caught a bot running into the wall once but it corrected itself
on seeing me.
