DM-Helleth
Jaspos
Helleth is one of the most unique, out of any level
builders league, levels I have ever played, Jaspos must have had
to go way out of his way to create a level like this. I heard
about Helleth and how good it was over the Internet and among
my friends, one of my friends Jon, who had never played the level,
said it was probably a cheap replica or conversion of DM-Gothic.
He could not have been farther from the truth. DM-Helleth has
one of the most carefully and thoroughly planned scenes that you
can find in Unreal Tournament. Its unique scene is like no other.
Helleth's theme is of an unholy demonic sanctum nestled deep within
the bowls of hell. Cries of the damned and soon to be damned echo
through the hallways, the whispering of demons echoes through
the sanctum, promising weak souls what they desire, and enslaving
them. Looking at the textures among the walls give you the creepy
feeling that you are not alone, that you are being watched from
every angle and view, even when you are the only player in the
map.
Looks:
Texturing is perfect; there are no over-scaled textures in this
map. The style of texturing the Author chose suits this demonic
sanctum perfectly, demons and damned angels line the walls, and
carved demons watch with glowing eyes everything that passes.
The texturing is quite scary if you think about it. Lava flows
through the level, in a twisted, hellish way. The lighting is
perfect. Lava is very well light, and the glowing eyes cast blue
light onto the walls, floors, and ceilings. Nothing is too dark
or too bright, and almost everything is bathed in a hellish orange
light from the lava. The skybox is a cave in the bowls of hell,
with Black Mountains jutting down from the sky and up from an
ocean of lava. Lighting is perfect and fascinating. This adds
even more to the creepy look to the map. Architecture of the map
is awesomely realistic, everything is perfectly aligned, and nothing
is over/undersized, I have never seen anything like it. Helleth
as a creepy look to it, as you can tell, I keep using the word
creepy, I keep using that word because nothing else can explain
it. The map is always spiraling downward in a sense, even after
you finish ascending a flight of stars, it seems that you keep
being pulled down. The level is an intertwining maze that seems
to swallow the player. The mouths of door are really "mouths"
in design.
Playability:
With all of this detail, you probably think this map is sluggish
and drags, but in truth, it is as smooth as velvet. Moreover,
Internet play would be perfect for this level. This level can
handle 6-14 players/bot perfectly, you can go higher, it will
not lag, but it will be a little over-crowded. Bots follow a perfect
path, and even seem to get the shield belt before I can get to
it, and they are tough to beat, like real players. They even kicked
my butt a couple of times. Weapons and armor placement is perfect,
nothing is too close or spread apart.
Faults:
Sorry, there are some big faults in this map, it is too perfect.
Nothing can beat it. And it is way too fun and addicting to play,
the map runs too smooth, no other level can come close to it,
and it is almost real. Now those are some major faults!
