DM-Atlantis
Eric Geer (MonsterTrosity)
DM-Atlantis was one of the few death matches selected
to be in the Make Something Unreal Contest, it is an awesome map,
and it should have made the top 3. However, there were some mistakes,
not too many though, that is what stopped it from winning. Eric
Geer's goal for this map was to create a death match with an experience
like no other death match. DM-Atlantis takes place in a dome under
the water. He said this map ran optimally on a 333mhz PentiumII
processor with a Voodoo3 3dfx video card and 256mb RAM, but that
it might be a little more CPU sensitive that other maps do. He
did a wonderful job on this map, and he did not do a half-a$$
job on this map like many mappers out there.
Looks:
This map is astonishingly realistic, you can see the water shifting
outside of the glass dome. The structure of this map is awesome
too, the dome has a special wire-frame look to it that can be
accomplished by very few people.
Textures are well done, though a few are unaligned. The textures
in this map match the scenery and theme very well, and give you
the feeling that you are actually on the ocean floor. Lighting
is excellent, there were very few lighting mistakes, the flares
were realistic, and nothing was too dark or too bright. The only
real mistake was a flare mistake, in an area where there was only
supposed to be one flare, there were two. The skybox, well, I
really should call it the waterbox, looked extremely realistic,
you would have to see it for yourself, it ahs this ocean look
to it as if things are swishing around out there. Architecture
is great, only a few brushes were unaligned. The architecture
was amazingly realistic, and will make you feel like you are actually
under water. There are some good secrets in this game, if you
can find them, or get to them, you will be rewarded with a redeemer
and a big-keg-o'-health.
Playability:
This map is extremely playable, I tested it on 433mhz computer
with 32mb ram and a Voodoo2 3d accelerator. (I took out my Voodoo3
and 3/4 of my 128 ram to see how CPU sensitive it really was)
It played fine. However, it did not even run on my 200Mhz Pentium
with 16 ram and no accelerator. The bots run around on the paths
well, but sometimes they just stand there, with their backs turned
on you. This is an easy shot, and usually boring. I recommend
8-14 players in this map, it gets boring with too low of a count,
and this map can handle it. Weapons placement is good, but it
could use a little more enforcer ammo, and a few more weapons
out there.
Faults:
Very few, just a lack of weapons, and the flare. Also the bots
sometimes just stand around.
