Amon
By Jeff Smyth
This is a CTF level from Jeff based loosley on the
anceint Egyptian stlye much in the same vein as Anubis from Mark
Austin.
LOOKS:
I found this level very apealing to the eye maybe a tad to washed
out in places. The insides of the building are lit very well with
the shadows helping to add to the atmosphere, There are some down
sides to the graphics unfortunatly there could have been more
done with the sky box because the rest of the level is very stiking
and powerful I did expect to see something when I stopped to look
out of the windows my fault I spose because I did get blown apart
shortly afterwards so just rewards? I dont really know... hehe!
A nice to see touch is that Jeff hasn't gone down
the same route as many of the designers and added an over the
top cloud plane... I think it was right not to include one.
The attention to detail may have been over looked
slightly with some of the construction taking on a very sharp
look and feel, generaly though the construction is sound throughout
the map.
PLAYABILITY:
This map is nice to play, in the same sort of layout as you'd
come to expect from a CTF level (Shame). The two flags are situated
at each end of the structure there are two levels on which to
actually play on, the top level seeming to be the prefered route
for the bots I was playing with, this made for a staight path
to the other flag using the lower level. On increasing the amount
of bots I found them to use both routes.
Talking of bots I found them to be very switched
on and clever although it will never replace human opponents I
feel they put up a good CTF match for you to have before you go
out for the evening.
Jeff has included the sniper rifel which is a good
desicion due to length of the paths you can defend a base from
one position, this makes for quite a long game. There are not
lots of weapons but enough to not run out of and if anythings
had to be in to much supply it would be the energy viles which
are on every corner... nearly.
FAULTS:
Now I dont like faulting maps because of the time a effort that
goes into them but I feel there are some in this that are not
really game threatening but enough to wind you up when playing.
Firstly there is on each side on the lower levels a bridge sructure
which has been built over liquid now on first falling in your
first reaction will be what have I fallen into? The answer would
be some liquid of some kind.. The construction of this part of
the map is not really up to the standard of the rest of the map
which is a shame. Now for the other fault again with this misterous
liquid the kill time is set way to low you end up letting go of
the keyboard and mouse waiting to die.
